TRE® (Tension and Trauma Release Exercises) is a powerful stress-reduction method that helps the body release deep patterns of muscular stress, tension, and trauma.
Developed by Dr. David Berceli, TRE® safely activates the body’s natural shaking or vibrating reflex, which helps release muscular tension and calm the nervous system. When practiced in a safe, controlled environment, this reflex encourages the body to return to a state of balance and relaxation.
TRE® is based on the principle—supported by research—that stress, tension, and trauma affect both the mind and body. The reflexive muscle vibrations generally feel soothing, and many people report feelings of peace, well-being, and renewed energy after practicing TRE®.
Designed as a self-help tool, TRE® can be learned and used independently throughout life to continually support personal health, wellness, and resilience.
All mammals naturally shake to release stress from threat or fear. You may have noticed a dog shaking when it is excited or scared. This is the body’s way of letting go of tension. Humans are designed the same way, but we often suppress this natural mechanism due to social norms, embarrassment, or other reasons. As a result, stress and tension can become trapped in the body, potentially contributing to disease and burnout.
Dr. Berceli developed a series of seven simple exercises to gently challenge and stretch the muscles involved in the fight or flight response. These exercises activate neurogenic tremoring, allowing the body to release stored stress and tension that was not fully discharged at the time of a traumatic event. After tremoring, the body can return to a state of deep relaxation, rest, and renewed resilience.
Once you learn to activate the neurogenic tremoring, you no longer need to rely on the exercises to begin shaking. The body’s natural mechanism can be used as needed throughout life, continuously supporting personal health, relaxation, and overall well-being.
The psoas muscles are some of the most important muscles in the body for managing, storing, and releasing stress. Often called the fight or flight muscles, the psoas tighten and contract in response to stress, protecting the body in primal ways.
The psoas spans from the 12th thoracic vertebra (T12) to the five lumbar vertebrae and flows through the pelvis to the top of the thigh bone. It is the only muscle connecting the spine to the legs, creating movement, stability, and a constant cycle of contraction and release throughout the body.
Connected to the diaphragm through fascia, the psoas influences both breathing and the body’s fear response. It plays a key role in structural balance, flexibility, strength, joint mobility, organ function, posture, and leg movement. Tight psoas muscles are often linked to pain in the lower back, neck, and shoulders.
TRE® targets and gently fatigues the psoas muscles through seven simple exercises, reactivating the body’s natural shaking mechanism. This process releases stored tension and stress, enhancing flexibility, mobility, and a sense of vitality throughout the body.
For the individual session, the first session is about 60 – 75 minutes. I will give you a brief introduction to TRE and guide you through the process step by step. Throughout the session, I will hold the safe space for you and let you tremor for 5 to 15 minutes to release whatever tension and stress is ready to be expelled in the session. You will learn some self-regulation exercises to help you stay grounded so that you will be able to practice at home in between our sessions.
